What does F-Gas regulation imply for temperature control solutions?
The F-Gas regulation introduces stricter measures to reduce the environmental impact of fluorinated greenhouse gases (F-gases) by restricting their use in temperature control solutions. Starting January 1, 2025, the production or import of temperature control equipment with F-gases with a GWP of 2500 or above will be prohibited. Refrigerants with GWPs below 2500 will still be allowed for maintenance, but the regulations will progressively tighten.
From January 1, 2027, temperature control equipment, such as thermo-chillers, with a cooling capacity of 12 kW or less will also be restricted if they use refrigerants with a GWP of 150 or higher. For units exceeding 12 kW, the limit is set at a GWP of 750. Additionally, importers must be registered in the EU F-Gas Portal and comply with the quota system.
In response, manufacturers like SMC have developed eco-friendly alternatives using low-GWP refrigerants such as R454C and R1234yf, or natural refrigerants like CO₂, ensuring compliance while minimizing environmental impact.
