SMC’s auto switches for actuators and air grippers with magnetic detection
SMC offers a wide range of auto switches for actuators / cylinders, and air grippers with magnetic detection. These switches rely on a magnetic ring integrated into the piston. As the piston moves through the pneumatic cylinder or gripper, the magnetic field generated by the magnet is detected by a proximity sensor mounted externally on the actuator.
These auto switches are ideal for applications that require precise piston position monitoring in cylinders or grippers, ensuring accurate feedback and control in automation systems.
Types of proximity sensors: solid state switches and reed switches
SMC’s proximity sensors are divided into two main types:
Both types are offered in general-purpose models or with a 2-colour indication feature, which visually signals the optimal operating position using different light colours. SMC also provides magnetic field resistant, heat resistant and wide range detection configurations. Additionally, various lead wire lengths are available to accommodate different installation needs.
For solid state switches, SMC offers versions with 2-colour indication and diagnostic outputs for enhanced performance monitoring. Water-resistant options with 2-colour indication are also available for use in demanding environments.
Actuator position sensor
Our cylinder position sensor functions as a specialised proximity switch, detecting the exact stroke position of the actuator through an analogue signal. This provides continuous feedback on the actuator's position, which is essential for applications that require high precision. The actuator position sensor is commonly used for:
- Measuring parameters such as dimensions, tension, workpiece thickness, screw-in depth, etc
- Monitoring actuator position in real time
- Discriminating workpieces by length or width
One of the key advantages of SMC’s actuator position sensor is its IO-link compatibility, enabling seamless communication between sensors and actuators for enhanced control and monitoring.
