SMC serves up new electric actuator for food industry
To perform in demanding operating environments such as those prevalent in the food industry, SMC is unveiling its advanced HF2A-LEY series rod-type electric actuator. Features such as IP69K-equivalent ingress protection, the use of stainless steel and FDA-compliant construction materials, a smooth profile preventing liquid accumulation and NSF H1 food-grade grease, make the HF2A-LEY electric actuator suitable for food cutting, chopping and filling machines. Indeed, any food processing machines subject to regular cleaning and sanitising regimes are able to benefit.
Providing robust protection against high-pressure, high-temperature washdowns, the IP69K-equivalent protection rating of the HF2A-LEY means it withstands water jets of up to 75°C at 8 MPa. Further ensuring no damage - even under extreme cleaning conditions - SMC manufactures all exterior parts of the new actuator from SUS304 stainless steel, while internal components such as seals and scrapers (blue colour) carry FDA approval.
Food-grade specification
Material and component specifications engineered to high standards make the HF2A-LEY suitable for use where equipment is in contact with food-related processes. This design ethos also protects against corrosion for the long-term durability of machinery exposed to constant washdowns, harsh cleaning chemicals and wet environments.
The actuator's rounded profile is another feature of note as it eliminates grooves where residual liquid can otherwise accumulate, inhibiting bacterial growth. Furthermore, the HF2A-LEY has chamfered edges and a design that encourages liquid run-off.
SMC’s new rod-type electric actuator also uses NSF-H1 approved grease, a standard for applications where incidental food contact may occur. NSF-H1 reduces health risks in event of accidental contamination.
Versatile design
Importantly, the HF2A-LEY allows for the precise control of motor capacity, making it versatile for use in various wet environments like beverage filling or meat processing. The actuator is available in size 25, 32 and 63. It offers a maximum stroke length of 800 mm and accommodates work loads (horizontal/vertical) up to 80 kg. Customers can select from either foot bracket or rod flange mounting variants.
Further supporting the product’s use in food industry applications is the presence of laser-engraved product markings instead of traditional stickers, which may peel off during high-pressure cleaning. Laser marking ensures that product information remains legible and intact, even after repeat exposure to cleaning chemicals and water jets.
Ultimately, the many special design features of the SMC HF2A-LEY series rod-type electric actuator ensure product optimisation for environments that prioritise cleanliness and hygiene, such as food processing plants.
