Compact SMC cylinder supports energy-efficient machines

Compact SMC cylinder supports energy-efficient machines

Among numerous major benefits of the new CQE series compact pneumatic cylinder from SMC is energy efficiency. CQE cylinders support a reduction in machine pressure without any negative effects on performance, providing high output force even at low pressure. Users can therefore reduce the supply pressure without increasing actuator bore size, facilitating a significant reduction in energy costs.

Engineers involved with new machine concepts will find the design characteristics of CQE series compact cylinders extremely appealing. Also able to benefit are designers already working on lowering the pressure for existing machines but have concerns about reductions in cylinder force.

As a further advantage, the high output force of SMC’s CQE compact cylinders helps design engineers to downsize their machines. With its enlarged polygonal piston area, CQE series cylinders provide up to 1.5 times higher force than existing CQ2 and CQE series cylinders of same bore size, even at lower operating pressure.

SMC tests show that customers can specify a cylinder one size smaller while maintaining the same theoretical output force. Furthermore, when installed in a moving element, the smaller size of the CQE cylinder reduces assembly weight and improves cycle time.

Time for a change

CQE cylinders are fully compatible in terms of external dimensions with existing CQ2 and CQS models, allowing straightforward replacement. The CQE’s piston speed of 50~500 mm/s also matches that of CQ2 and CQS cylinders.

CQE series cylinders benefit a wide range of machine tasks, including clamping, pressing and positioning. During operation, the piston rod does not rotate due to the polygonal piston construction, avoiding any misalignment of application components.

Maintain control

Ease of maintenance is a further benefit. No special tools (like a watchmaker’s screwdriver) are necessary to remove the stop ring and replace the seals, helping to save time.

The new SMC CQE compact cylinder series spans four sizes: 20, 25, 32 and 40 (each new cylinder size has an equivalent piston area of a cylinder one size above, thus 25, 32, 40 and 50 mm diameter). Cylinder stroke variants are available from 5 to 50 mm, in 5 mm increments.
